Some Things to Consider Before Booking International Flights

International flights have become routine for many business people and tourists.  If you're just starting out with international travel, there are a few things that you might want to keep in mind.

International Flight Security

Security concerns are widespread and you will run into delays at every airport in the world. Particularly after August 2006 foiled terrorist attempt in Great Britain, security concerns over international flights are intense. You need to find out exactly what the requirements are for pre-boarding inspection when you travel out of a country. Some airports may be a little easier than others, but most will be very strict about the time you have to check in before departure. Do not wait until the last minute to discover that you are already late.  The rules for international flights change all the time so be sure that you check with the airport first.

Air Fares

The price of the air fare is usually the first consideration that people have when they reserve their international flights.  However, you might want to think about the trip itself.  You may be on the plane anywhere from five to ten hours (or longer).  For that reason, you might want to spend a bit more on  your air fare so that the flight is more comfortable.

Blurb Alert!

Prices for international flights will vary from airline to airline.  Because there are many airline carriers, it is worth spending some time shopping around for the best fare.  It is possible to save 50-75% off the normal ticket price for your international flights if you change the travel date and fly during the off-peak season.  Also, you might want to avoid booking the shortest possible travel time with the least amount of routes.

As an example, if you are going to a destination in Europe, check to see if you can get a cheap flight to London and book your onward travel separately. This is because there are very inexpensive air fares out of London to other European destinations that will ultimately cost less than a direct flight from the United States to your European destination.  The same applies to Asia. Flying to Taiwan or the Philippines on your way to Thailand or Singapore and switching planes and carriers may save you a great deal of money.

International Flights and Hotel Accommodation Packages

Another thing to consider when you book you international flights is that airfare-hotel accommodation packages can save a lot of money. Cheap airframe usually mean a decrease in service or amenities. On the other hand, with some of these packages, you get regular service and hotel accommodations for the same price as a normal airplane ticket.

While travel agency web sites will give you great information, you might also want to check the airline's web site for special deals.   Also, check out the tourist information web sites for the destination you are traveling. Many times they will announce some great deals on international flights.
