I have been eyeing some gorgeous necklaces on EBay that are made from real orchids coated in resin, and of course, I want to make my own. I've never worked with resin before, so I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions or pointers???
thanks!... Re: Seeking Corset Pattern Suggestions - I would recommend plasticwrap, and duct tape first. mark your centerlines, and tweak points.cut up the center back, figure your allowances, and cut the pattern to lay flat. there will be a lot of marks on the duct tape pattern, careful not to lose them, once it's laid flat, you can mark your stay lines and cut it into as many panels as you wish. they do fit best.... Re: what to buy at sewing store sales - A year ago, I took on a monthly party decorating job which has turned into a 3-4x a month job. I went fabric shopping at a store going out of business, and remembered to grab spools of heavy duty thread. I can't believe how much I've used, just for mending, in the last year. Good advice about tools, too.
I was blessed to inherit the notions collections of both grandmothers when they died, and it's amazing what I've pulled out of the box recently. My inner packrat is so validated. ;-)... Re: CRACK(er) Houses - DON'T FORGET THE STRAWBERRIES!... Re: Holiday gifts in the mix? - I'm looking at some different textures of yarn to make scarfs. Also hand painting some pots and growing culinary herbs.... Re: Getting odors out of thrift store clothes - Have you rinsed them in white vinegar?... Re: REMINDER: Specialty Crafty Vixens Tribes - Thanks Lobocita!... Re: what to buy at sewing store sales - What a great post. I always get 40% coupons for JoAnn Fabrics (a popular fabric/craft store in this area) and try to find different thing that aren't on sale that would be a good buy. I never thought of trying out the zippers (I've been too chicken to try those as I make my own patterns and am still a "beginner" for sewing machines - been sewing all my life by hand). This is why I love tribe - you learn things all the time. Thanks for the advice.... Re: what to buy at sewing store sales - I bought me a new sewing machine, one with direct/motor driven needle. Got it "new" although marked down over 1/2 because it had been used at a quilting show. It's awesome. I'm very pleased with my purchase. And I got it at Ray's, not your average JoAnn Fabrics.... Re: what to buy at sewing store sales - great advise - especially with all the sales going on now... Re: Alternative housing - of the gingerbread type - Twizzlers/redvines work really great. Cut them up in tiny chunks to make bricks to face a house or chimney. They make great porch rails, fences, trees, house trim, pathway liners, etc.
My brother once made a gingerbread cathedral with crushed lifesavers for the stained glass. It worked really really well. The flying buttresses were a bitch though.
If I was motivated to move myself from this couch, I'd go in and find my mother's secret gingerbread recipe. It's tweaked to be really solid, better for building, but still tasty/yummy. And she doesn't use lots and lots of sugar. She always hated over-sweetened cakes/breads, and she always believed us kids got too much sugar anyway. So she took it waaaaay down in her recipes.
But that would mean getting up and I have a back spasm, and, well, I ain't moving right now ... Re: ideas for bath basket gifts? - AAARRRGHH!! thanks for reminding me about it.... Re: ideas for bath basket gifts? - You are all fantastic! I have been lurking on this tribe for a while, admiring the collective brilliance thank you *so much* for the tips and ideas!... Re: yarn - There acrylic yarns that are better made today. Some mimic the look and feel of wool just fine. I prefer acrylic for babies because it's washable and a new mom has enough to worry about than hand washing and blocking a garment. Some people prefer natural fibers and if you know them well enough that that is their preference, then use wool or cotton. Superwash wools are great, but if you're on a tight budget it can be pricey. All in all it's up to you. If you're making tons of blankets and can't afford all the expense, then go acrylic. In the end the recipient will be happy to receive a handmade gift from you. It's more personal.... Re: baby blanket yarn - Not only do I love lion brand yarn but there are free download patterns at their site.
