If you're shy, for example, you do not need to worry about making a fool of yourself.  When online, either through a chat room or a personals site, you have the freedom to express yourself, your interests, and your beliefs without ridicule. Not only is it easy to be honest about yourself, it’s also beneficial.  When you finally meet the people you’ve been talking with in "real life," you’re more likely to hit it off if you’ve both been honest about who you are.   You'll be much more confident because you've spent time getting to know the other person, even if over the Internet.

Those who are busy, a benefit in meeting people online is that it is easy to weed through a large number of prospective mates or friends in a relatively short period of time. Common sense dictates that people who share lots of interests are usually the most compatible, and since most sites allow you to display your favorite music, movies, and activities, it’s pretty easy to search for people who share your same interests.
