Feeling Edgy? Tips on Dealing with Anxiety
How you handle stress may depend on your skills in dealing with anxiety. Although anxiety may come in a variety of forms, the end result is always the same -- stress.
Symptoms of Anxiety
Here are some common symptoms of anxiety:
- You may feel tired and fatigued.
- Your thoughts might be constantly rehashing the issue or problem so that it seems to take over your life. Although the stress caused by anxiety may be preventing you from enjoying a good night's sleep, the constant rehashing in your mind of the issue may keep you up all night, making your fatigue even worse.
- You might have heart palpitations or feelings of panic.
Anxiety is a common problem. The methods available to you for dealing with anxiety need to fit your lifestyle. For example, if you are a 110 pound woman, it's unlikely that you'll want to join a men's wrestling team in order to work out your anxieties. Or if you're a tough, construction worker type, yoga might not be your cup of tea. The method of dealing with anxiety has to be one that you're comfortable with.
Some Tips for Dealing With Anxiety
When dealing with anxiety, you have to first figure out the source of your anxiety, and decide if there is something you can do about it. If the solution seems overwhelming, break it down into chunks that you feel you can manage without becoming more anxious. An example of this might be if you are named the personal representative of an estate and you are stuck with cleaning a messy house before putting it on the market. You might want to set a schedule, such as going through personal papers and tossing what is unnecessary. You then might want to hire help to clean the house, and then hire an auctioneer to dispose of the contents of the home.

Exercise and relaxation are both great tools for dealing with anxiety. Exercise will help take your mind off your problems, and will release feel-good endorphins into your system. Relaxation techniques will also help you relieve your stress, and will help you focus your mind on positive issues.
If you find dealing with your anxiety is beyond you, ask for help! A third party can see the bigger picture and will be more objective about how to handle the source of anxiety. You aren’t a failure if you seek help when dealing with anxiety. As a matter-of-fact, recognizing that you need help shows that you are a strong person who exercises responsibility for you well-being, and that you refuse to be a victim of your fears.
If you are unsure who to turn to when dealing with anxiety, check your local phone book or the Internet for counselors or support groups near you. Sometimes it's best to consult a counselor or support group instead of a family member because someone outside of the family will be less judgmental and more objective. If you decide to consult with a professional, you will benefit from the professional's experience and education.
