The gentle chime of a cuckoo clock can really bring back great childhood memories.  For me, my grandparents came to the United States from Holland and they brought their cuckoo clock with them.  As a child, I would sit in front of that clock, waiting for the hour to strike and the cuckoo bird to emerge from the clock and announce the hour.

You really don’t see too many of these quirky timepieces today.  This hard-to-find item is often bought second hand, although there are some companies -- particularly European import stores -- that carry several lines of cuckoo clocks.

If you can find a used cuckoo clock, grab it while you can.  They are hard to find and may become valuable collectors' items.

Find a Cuckoo Clock at Estate Sales and Antique Stores

One of the best places to find a cuckoo clock is at an estate sale. It's a hit and miss process that does not guarantee that  you will find a particular style, but many older people have a cuckoo clock or two stashed away in their attics. Since the popularity of such an item has not reach its fullest potential in recent years, many relatives conducting estate sales are more than happy to part with the timepiece.

Another place to find older timepieces of good quality is your local antique store. Depending on what part of the country you live, your local dealer may have a cuckoo clock or even have an entire section dedicated to clocks of all kinds. There are a couple of benefits of shopping for a cuckoo clock in an antique store. First of all you can find out if the item is in working condition or not. You may fall in love with a timepiece that is not working. If so, the merchant might be able to quote you a repair price and arrange to have the cuckoo clock fixed. An antique dealer can also track down a cuckoo clock style for you.  Some dealers enjoy this challenge, but it will take time.

Online Shopping May Be Your Best Bet When Looking For a Cuckoo Clock

Some of us are not quite patient enough to do all of this searching and waiting for our merchandise.  If that's the case, the Internet is a great place to find a cuckoo clock that's vintage or new. 

EBay has a great selection of antique, vintage and new model cuckoo clocks.  I have also found some online dealers who have a nice selection.

Since these unique clocks are somewhat rare, I have personally found that looking for a cuckoo clock on the Internet is faster and easier than trying to hunt down a style that I like at antique stores.
