What in the World is Scrapbooking?
Anyone can create a run of the mill photo album, but scrapbooking is much more. For the thousands of people who are taking up this hobby as a serious pastime, the art of scrapbooking is not only about preserving photos, but also telling a story.
Scrapbooks are a combination of a photo album, a journal and a keepsake heirloom. By combining the written word, photos and even newspaper and magazine clippings and other features, a scrapbook that’s well made and well designed is a work of art that stands as a testament to a person’s life, a singular event, a person’s beloved hobby, a career or more.
Young or old, women, men, boys and girls are all getting into the scrapbooking hobby, allowing their photos and their imaginations to work together to tell an entertaining and visual story about what they would like to share. From scrapbooks dedicated to single people, families, hobbies and even vacations, think of the finished product as a self published book that someone can enjoy hundred years from now.
Unlike a regular photo album, almost anyone can pick up a scrapbook and figure out who the people are and what they’re doing . Whether it’s a scrapbook about another hobby or about your children, the words and pictures combine to give others a good glimpse into the lives and personalities of the subject.
If you have a youngster, you can start a scrapbook about his or her life now and keep adding to it as he or she grows. 18 or 20 years from now, your scrapbook will make a one-of-a-kind wedding or graduation gift that your son or daughter will cherish.
Scrapbooking is becoming such a popular hobby because it’s fun, affordable and addictive.
Anyone who cares enough to snap a picture of something or someone and have it developed or printed probably cares enough about the image to preserve it. If the photo’s really important, it begs for some sort of explanation that will remind the owner of the day or circumstances under which it was shot. A simple caption in a regular photo album might suffice, but a scrapbook provides a lot more freedom of expression. Combining the fine arts of photography and writing, scrapbooking is an undertaking anyone of any age can get involved in.
