Buying a Gas Mask for Personal Safety

These days, everyone is more of aware of personal safety and security issues. We all want to be prepared without being overly paranoid. Personal safety devices and equipment that we should always keep on hand include a gas mask.

Having a gas mask for each member of your family or office staff is prudent. The most important reason for having a gas mask available is for use in the event of a fire, either at home or in the office. It is not the flames that cause the greatest number of deaths; it is the smoke. By wearing a gas mask, you, your employees or your family members will have a boost in vital few moments to get out of a burning building to safety.

How a Gas Mask Works

There are two basic types of gas masks:  the half-mask air purifiers and the full face hooded type. The hooded masks offer protection to your eyes. The half mask may not be as effective because the eyes are very sensitive to chemicals and offer an entry point for bacteria. The downside of the hooded type of gas mask is that they are bulky and less easy to get on in a hurry.

The basic principle behind a gas mask is to filter bad air so that when you breathe, you are safer from the toxic effects of whatever is in the air than if you were to breathe the air directly. Most gas mask filters have a charcoal filtration system. Charcoal removes a lot of unpleasant chemicals and makes the air tolerable, at least for a short amount of time. Any filter may use one (or more) of three different techniques to purify air: particle filtration, chemical absorption or a chemical reaction to neutralize another chemical.

Precaution is Always a Smart Move

If you are you interested in purchasing a gas mask, make sure that you purchase from a reputable dealer. It is not going to do you any good to buy a cheap gas mask that has substandard quality.

Nowadays, gas masks are designed to be more user-friendly. This means that they are easier and faster to put on, and they are easier to store in convenient locations.  Many office workers place a gas mask in one of their desk drawers, where it is easy to get to in case of an emergency.

Hopefully, you will never experience a disaster situation.  However, precaution is always wise.  If a fire or chemical spill does occur in your lifetime, you will be glad you had the foresight to buy a gas mask.
