Hate the After-Taste of Decaffeinated Coffee?  Try today's brands...they've really improved

I'm quite sensitive to caffeine and back in the 1980s, thought I should switch to decaffeinated coffee for health reasons and so that I could sleep better at night.  Quite frankly, the taste made me almost ill, leaving my stomach churning and gurgling for hours.   For some reason, decaffeinated coffee would leave a bitter, acidic taste in my mouth and some brands would give me a splitting headache.

Because of my reactions to decaffeinated coffee, I was quite hesitant when my girlfriend suggested that I try some decaffeinated coffee at her place.  I was shocked at the difference.  Decaffeinated coffee now tastes like the "real thing" -- without the awful after taste, upset stomach and terrible headache.

Admittedly, my girlfriend and I stick with the more expensive brands of decaffeinated coffee because we both don't like the lesser brands which aren't much better from what I tried in the 80s.  However, I have to admit that if we're out driving around, Dunkin DonutsĀ® has a pretty decent decaffeinated coffee.

Grinding the Beans and Buying More Expensive Decaffeinated Coffee Brands is What I Do

As I mentioned, the only decaffeinated coffee brands that I will drink are the more expensive ones.  I also like to buy my coffee in whole beans which I grind immediately before brewing.

Caffeine is a naturally occurring molecule in coffee beans.  Quite frankly, I'm not sure what is done to remove the caffeine when decaffeinated coffee is sold.  I tend to buy the beans and grind them so that the flavor is fresh and am always wondering how on earth the caffeine was removed when I stand there, grinding coffee beans.  I guess this is something I'll need to research in my spare time!

For the time being, however, if you're caffeine sensitive and have been avoiding drinking decaffeinated coffee for the same reasons that I was, give it a try.  It's really improved over the last decade, and you might find that you enjoy the decaffeinated coffee brands as much, if not more, than the regular coffee selections.
