How to Clean Jewelry With Simple Household Items
For years, because I didn't know any better, I believed that the only way to clean jewelry was to take it in to the local
jeweler. However, some of my pieces have sentimental value to me and I get nervous about leaving my jewelry with someone. Several
months ago, and after putting off visiting the local jeweler, I noticed that all of my silver jewelry was beginning to look pretty grungy. I
looked around at my local drugstore to try to find something that would clean jewelry without damaging it in any way. To me, it seemed that
the products that were available to clean jewelry had some very harsh chemicals in them and I was too nervous to try any of these
products on my jewelry.
The reason that my silver jewelry keeps getting tarnished is because I live in a humid environment. Moisture that is in the air will settle on
jewelry, causing the metal to tarnish. If humidity and moisture is a problem for you, be sure to store your jewelry in an airtight
container when you are not wearing it.
I asked some of the gals at the office if they knew about any household products that could clean jewelry without damaging
it. Practically everyone told me to use toothpaste! I was warned that I should use toothpaste only on silver jewelry; it might tarnish
other types of metal. Since most of my jewelry was silver, I decided to go ahead and try the toothpaste method.
Following my co-workers' advice, I put a small amount of toothpaste on my index finger and massaged it gently over the tarnished silver. The
ladies were right -- using toothpaste was a great way to clean jewelry. It removed the tarnish and restored my jewelry to
its radiant silver. Although I have to clean the jewelry this way every month or so, it is quick and simple and saves me the worry about
leaving my jeweler at the local shop.
If you are looking for a way to clean jewelry but are not sure what kind of metal your jewelry is, you should do a little bit of research
before you try anything. Using some substances to clean jewelry may result in your jewelry becoming tarnished and impossible to clean it in
the future. The toothpaste worked on my jewelry but I do not think that it will work very well on brass or nickel jewelry.
Check around with some of the local older women before you go out and spend any money on a product that claims to clean jewelry. You may
find that you have something that will do the trick lying around your house.
