Are Computer Auctions Worth The Time -- Or Are the Systems Too Outdated?

Thousands -- perhaps millions -- of businesses throughout the world buy and use millions of computers. Due to the fast pace of new technologies, many of those computers become outdated.  Large businesses that can account for depreciation and that have a strong financial foundation might give away or throw out their outdated computers.  Most businesses, however, and in particular, small and mid-sized businesses, need to recoup some of their computer hardware purchases. To do so, they sell their outdated computers in what is generally known as a computer auction.

What You Might Find at Computer Auctions

Why would anyone bid on an outdated computer?  The computer itself might be outdated, but there could still be several usable parts in it. The memory, motherboard and keyboard are examples of computer components that could be used again.  Sometimes, the entire computer can be used "as is," particularly if the computer will be used for home use and does not require the latest technical and hardware upgrades.

Computer auctions are an excellent place to find cheap yet effective computers. I have personally been to several computer auctions and was able to buy some laptop computers that work just fine for my small businesses.  Since I do not need the latest in Bluetooth or wireless technology, these laptops from computer auctions have become a staple in my small business.

Preparing Yourself for the Auction

I enjoy attending computer auctions because if I don't need something, I have friends who do.  I can find them in the Sunday paper's classifieds.  Participation is free but the payment terms are nearly always cash. If you choose to attend some computer auctions to see for yourself what types of deals you can find, be sure to have cash on hand.

If you are looking for the latest in technology, processing speed and hardware, you probably will not find what you seek at computer auctions.  However, you can find some great components to add to your systems or you can find some older model computers or notebooks that will work for you. Evaluate your realistic needs before deciding to buy any equipment.
