Filter Out Unwanted Ads with an Ad Blocker
Personally, I like ads on Internet pages. They lead me to resources I might not otherwise find on the search engines. Nonetheless, I don't care for pop ups and I can certainly understand parents would want ad blockers for all types of ads.
An ad blocker can filter out the pop up and inline ads showing in your web browsers. Popup ads are particularly annoying because you can't read a page without a screen covering the text. Sometimes popup ads will keep displaying every few minutes and you spend more time trying to close them then enjoy your web browsing experience. For people with little memory on their computer, these popup ads can even stall the computer.
If you are a parent, an ad blocker might be necessary to protect your children from sometimes harmful Internet content. Many ads that pop up may advertise things that are potentially dangerous or upsetting to children, such as pornography or shocking videos and documentaries. Particularly in the case of pornography on the Internet, the ad may lead the child to a page that will install Trojans and malware into the computer. An ad blocker will decrease the likelihood of these advertisements popping up, and even if they sometimes do manage to pop up past the ad blocker, the likelihood of this happening is greatly reduced from your "pre ad blocker" days.

Besides this, ad blockers will greatly increase your performance of your web browser. The amount of resources taken up by ads that repeatedly pop up is ridiculous – it wastes your computers processing power, and it wastes your time. But with an ad blocker, you can go right where you want on the Internet without bothering about advertisements.
Looking Beyond Ad Blockers - You Need More
Of course, an ad blocker alone is not enough to stop all web mischief from reaching your computer. Some systems will install harmful “malware” on your computer which will stop it from functioning correctly. This software will keep track of where you go on the Internet and sends reports back to advertisers so that they can track you and try to sell things to you. Malware can also disable ad blockers, forcing you to see advertisements that should be blocked. Malware programs can install site diverters on your computer which make your browser automatically open to web sites that you do not want to visit, or which change your home page to something that you do not want. To stop this type of unwelcome programming, you absolutely must install a good anti-virus program and possibly a spyware detection/deletion program.
Finally, no matter whether you have an ad blocker, an antivirus and an anti-spyware program, you need to use the Internet responsibly. Downloading pirated software is an open invitation to installing Malware and spyware into your computer. Do not go to web sites with lots of ads or places that look “fishy” or seem to promise illegal or questionable services. These are more likely than any others to be the ones to subvert your computer and ruin your browsing experience.
